Aeronautics research is also a NASA responsibility. Since its creation on July 29, 1958, NASA has played a dominant role in manned space flight, solar system exploration and space research worldwide.

Among the agency’s most notable achievements are the Apollo manned space programs, the U.S. Space Shuttle, the International Space Station (in cooperation with several countries), space telescopes such as Hubble and Kepler, the exploration of Mars by the Viking, Mars Exploration Rover, Curiosity, and Perseverance space probes, and the exploration of Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto by the Pioneer, Voyager, Galileo, Cassini-Huygens, and New Horizons probes.

ESA

New Space and the role of public support

The European Space Agency Écouter (ESA), most often referred to by its acronym ESA, is an intergovernmental space agency that coordinates space projects carried out jointly by 22 European countries. The share invested directly by CNES focuses in order of importance on launchers and the management of the Kourou launch base (€324 million, 17%, in 2018), military missions (€269 million, 14%), scientific missions (€167 million, 9%), the study of the Earth, generally within the framework of binational cooperation (€120 million, 6%), and developments around telecommunication and navigation satellites (€42 million, 2%).
